A political satire comic by Servando Gonzalez

Contrary to common belief, comics can be used for very serious purposes. This is, i.e., the case of the Japanese comics called manga. Manga comics have been used to depict adventure, romance, historical drama, comedy, science fiction, mystery, suspense, detective, and horror, among others.
Here in the West we have an outstanding case of Comics used for serious purposes. Cartoonist Art Spiegelman has effectively used his comic series Maus to graphically describe his father’s experience as a Holocaust survivor.
I have always loved using comics as a medium for political satire. In 1986 I published Historia herética de la revolución fidelista, a comic (in Spanish) about Castro’s revolution in Cuba.
The comics in this OBSERVANDO series go beyond the use of just pictures to include detailed explanatory and bibliographical notes supporting the assertions expressed in the comic.

Servando Gonzalez is a Cuban-born American writer. He has written books, essays and articles on U.S. and Latin American history, intelligence, espionage, conspiracies and semiotics.
